CANS Assessment

The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) is a multi-purpose, collaborative, and comprehensive assessment tool that explores the strengths and needs of the child and family. The CANS is not a form, but rather a place to capture the natural conversation between a care provider and children and families, about the shared vision for the family.

This tool helps care providers develop a treatment or service plan that addresses a child's strengths and needs while building strong engagement. The CANS may recommend certain services but does not prescribe a cookie cutter treatment plan or mandate particular interventions. The CANS also serves as a tool to facilitate quality improvement initiatives and to monitor, measure, and assess the outcomes of services.
